Trike Time Machine | Web-Only Exclusive
The Internet is a shrinking ray making the world smaller all the time. Earlier today, we linked to this story on our Facebook page. All the way over in Germany, Andreas Friedrich shares a couple of pics of his own killer custom trike in the comments section. A few emails later, he’s sent yours truly a grip of pictures of it and a little back story. All of a sudden, I have a bike feature to share with you from half a world away. When I started writing bike features for Hot Rod Bikes at the turn of the millenium, it wasn’t nearly this quick or easy. Time moves quickly, don’t it?
Speaking of which, Andreas drew inspiration for this cool Softail trike from the trikes of old, going so far as to dub it his own personal time machine. Years ago he came across an old picture of one and thought, “How cool is that shit?” He searched for more old trike shots. One day he saw a Softail trike from Sweden that really spoke to him, pointing him in the direction he wanted to go. Eventually, he laid his mitts on a 1988 Softail frame and a used S&S motor, a new 6-speed trans with a reverse gear, and he was ready to build his own.
The front end is a special construction from AME made exclusively for Andreas. The handlebars are handmade and the complete body is handmade from 2mm aluminum. Akrapovic custom fabricated the exhaust and Friedrich himself made the aluminum powdercoat on it. The back lights are from a swap meet and he made so many parts by hand listing them all would be a separate story in and of itself. Danny Schramm of Schrammwerk custom painted Friedrich’s time machine. Check out the Drag Daddy artwork on it!
Here’s a full gallery on the trike below. Andreas even took the time to send us some of the concept art and pre-painted parts. Enjoy!
